Wildfires hit Spain’s Almería province
Thirteen people were found dead after the ferocious blaze that swept across 7,000 hectares of the south‑east. Twelve of the victims were foreign nationals and seven were British.
British victims included the Gillam couple from Bédar, and survivor Malcolm Timbrell – a 70‑year‑old who escaped by hiding in a car. His wife and friends were presumed among the deceased.
The fire forced the evacuation of around 1,500 residents. Spanish authorities say the flames were fueled by extreme heat, with temperatures frequently topping 40 °C in recent years.
For the foreign families, the tragedy has been personal: a daughter on Facebook wrote, “Our parents did not survive the fire.” The Foreign Office confirmed its support for affected British nationals and remains in close contact with Spanish officials.
The blaze continues to spark discussions on climate change and disaster preparedness across Europe.
