A massive wildfire has erupted in the Fontainebleau forest just 60km southeast of Paris. The blaze is spreading fast and has taken out a major highway that links north and south of the city.
Interior Minister Laurent Nunez says the fire could have been set on purpose. He points to about 10 ignition points found within a 1,000‑meter circle, a pattern that suggests deliberate arson.
Police have arrested two people linked to the fire, and 59 others in France have been detained in connection with various fires this year.
Firefighters are coming with planes, helicopters, and ground teams to try to stop the fire and protect homes and natural areas. It’s the first time France has flown aircraft from its typical dry south‑east to help a fire near Paris.
The heatwave that’s hot‑stamping Europe this summer is driving these huge fires. France alone has lost about 25,000 hectares to wildfire this year. Other countries—Spain, the UK, and France’s own nuclear plants—are also feeling the pressure of soaring temperatures.
