In brief

Mongolia has welcomed 919,104 foreign visitors this year, reaching 91.9% of its 2026 target of one million. The government, seeking to diversify an economy dominated by mining, has extended its “Years to Visit Mongolia” campaign to 2028 and is promoting tourism throughout the harsh continental climate. Meeting the target would boost hospitality, artisan markets and help diversify cities beyond mining.

Ulan Bator – Mongolia is on track to hit its 2026 goal of 1 million foreign tourist arrivals, with 919,104 visitors so far, says the Mongolian Tourism Organization.

That figure represents 91.9 percent of the target, and an increase in arrivals compared with last year, when the country welcomed over 847,000 foreign visitors.

Mongolia recorded 847,000 visitors in 2025, a 5‑percent rise from the previous year, a rise most other Asian destinations have struggled to match.

Tourism is a key part of the government’s plan to diversify the economy, which for decades has relied mainly on mining exports.

Cold winters and short summers make tourism seasonal, so officials are pushing for year‑round travel.

As part of that effort, the government has extended its Years to Visit Mongolia campaign through 2028, hoping each year will draw at least one million foreign visitors.

While summers attract more tourists, Mongolia’s terrain also welcomes winter travelers who seek ski resorts and nomadic camps. Yet winter attractions still lag behind summer activities, limiting overall visitor numbers.

The government has several initiatives to fill this gap, such as improving winter accommodation, promoting holiday festivals, and increasing marketing abroad to show Mongolia’s year‑long appeal.

The extended Years to Visit Mongolia campaign builds on the success of the inaugural run, which helped raise the visitor figure in 2023 and 2024.

Experts say meeting the 1 million visitor goal will boost related sectors, from hospitality to local artisans, and help Mongolian cities diversify away from mining.

With 919,104 arrivals already recorded, officials expect the final stretch of the year to bring the remaining 80,896 visitors needed to reach the target.
