Donald Trump just handed over a hefty $5 million to former writer E Jean Carroll after a New York jury had found him liable for sexual abuse and defamation three years ago. The payment, which includes interest earned while Trump fought the case, finally went through after a judge ordered that the sum be released from a court‑controlled account.
Carroll, 82, claimed that Trump harassed her in a Bergdorf Goodman store in Manhattan and later posted a denial on his Truth Social page in 2022. When a 2023 jury awarded her $5 million, Trump pushed to delay the payout and even tried to get the Supreme Court to hear an appeal, which the Justices declined.
His lawyers called the case a “Witch Hunt” and a “hoax,” arguing that the judge had admitted prejudicial evidence. The US Federal Appeals Court upheld the jury’s decision last year, and the Supreme Court’s refusal to review it cleared the path for the money to be paid.
Carroll celebrated the ruling with her Substack audience, insisting “this win is for every woman in the world.” The sanctions come amid another separate claim that Trump defamed her, which also led to an almost $84 million award that his appeal was denied last year.
