A Tragic Fire in Lima’s La Victoria
Early Wednesday, a fire ripped through a home in Lima’s southern La Victoria district, claiming the lives of 10 family members, including five children and five adults, police said.
The blaze started at about 3 a.m. local time, after neighbors reported unknown people setting fire to motorcycles parked outside. The flames spread quickly through flammable mattress‑making materials owned by the family, a group that had faced threats and demands for extortion payments.
Seventeen people were inside the building when the fire began; seven escaped, while the others tragically perished. Victims ranged from 3 to 15 years old and 29 to 72 years old. The bodies were burned beyond recognition, police said.
The National Police maintained a strong presence in the area to prevent further criminal acts and called the day a national mourning event, urging reflection on safety and resilience in the community.
