In a dramatic blaze that erupted after midnight in the small Swiss Alpine town of Thusis, a restaurant‑attic building was almost completely destroyed. Police report that the fire began on the second floor and quickly spread, leaving five people missing and eight injured.
Nearly 100 firefighters rushed to the scene, which required a crane to open the roof after the stairs collapsed. "The building was so damaged that we had to cut the roof open," a spokesman said.
Fourteen residents escaped, though two suffered serious wounds, two moderate and four minor. Medical crews transported the injured to hospitals in Chur, Thusis, Ilanz and Zurich.
