In brief

After a three-year long struggle over naming their son, a couple from Karnataka found their way back together with the help of the court, agreeing on the name Aryavardhana, symbolizing "of nobility."

In a unique case from Karnataka, India, a couple’s disagreement over their baby’s name became so intense that it led to a divorce filing. The dispute started back in 2021 after the woman gave birth to a son and returned to her parents' home, a common practice for new mothers in India. She rejected the name proposed by her husband, leading to a prolonged separation.Instead, the mother chose the name Adi, combining initials from both parents. As months went on, the woman sought financial support from her husband through local courts, which eventually escalated to divorce proceedings. The case, initially filed in a local court, was transferred to the Lok Adalat, a mediation court known for settling disputes. Judges proposed various names, but the couple held their ground until the court suggested a resolution. Eventually, the couple agreed on the name Aryavardhana, which means "of nobility." They celebrated their reconciliation by exchanging traditional garlands, a symbol of acceptance in Indian culture, and left court with hopes of mending their relationship.Interestingly, this isn't the first case of its kind in India, as court involvement in baby naming disputes seems to be gaining attention. Last year, another mother had to petition the court to register her child's name after facing bureaucratic challenges.
