In brief
The Russian‑occupied Ukrainian city of Oleshky has entered a truce, a move reported to have been brokered by U.S. First Lady Melania Trump. The ceasefire will let humanitarian teams deliver supplies and evacuate residents trapped by conflict. Russia’s defence ministry halted fire near Kherson to prepare for aid work. Ukraine’s human‑rights commissioner confirmed the truce on social media. The White House praised Mr. Trump’s engagement after he penned a letter urging Putin to protect children.
Melania Trump just helped start a truce in the war‑torn city of Oleshky, Ukraine.
After the U.S. first lady announced her support a week earlier, fighting stopped along the Dnipro River – the frontline that splits Ukrainian positions from Russian forces.
Russia’s defence ministry said it halted firing near Kherson to set up a humanitarian corridor for aid deliveries and to evacuate civilians.
Ukraine’s human‑rights commissioner posted on Facebook that the truce had started, confirming the Ukrainian side’s commitment and noting that only about 6,000 of the city’s 24,000 residents remain, including 200 children.
The White House highlighted Trump’s role, noting she had written to Vladimir Putin in August 2025, urging protection of children worldwide.
In the coming days, civilians will be visited by non‑military leaders from both sides to assess and meet their needs.
