In brief

The Land Transport Authority announced that Singapore will start sending 660 electric buses to service routes starting in late 2026. The plan aims for half of the city’s buses to be electric by 2030 and all buses to run on cleaner energy by 2040. The new buses feature step‑free entrances, red and green lighting on double‑decker staircases, and longer‑lasting batteries.

Singapore will start deploying 660 new electric buses from the end of 2026, the Land Transport Authority said on Wednesday.

The move is part of the city‑state’s plan to turn its public bus fleet to cleaner energy. By 2030, the authority says, 50 percent of the fleet will be electric, and by 2040 all buses will run on cleaner energy.

The new buses will have no steps along the main passageway, making it easier for commuters, especially those with mobility aids. Double‑deck models will have green and red lighting on their staircases to help passengers navigate.

Battery technology has also improved. The longer‑lasting batteries mean the buses run for longer periods before needing a recharge, reducing downtime and emissions.

Singapore’s expansion of electric buses is part of a broader effort to cut fuel demand and reduce air pollution. The high‑profile launches also showcase the city’s commitment to sustainable transportation.
