In brief

Vance's meeting with Modi highlights efforts to strengthen the bilateral trade relationship, amidst rising global trade issues.

US Vice-President JD Vance has landed in Delhi, kicking off a four-day tour to strengthen ties with India. His visit comes amidst rising trade tensions sparked by US tariff policies. He will engage in discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi as both leaders aim to fast-track a long-awaited bilateral trade deal. Before the formal talks, which will address important regional and global matters, Vance took time to explore the cultural sights of India, including the Akshardham temple. Accompanied by his wife Usha and children, Vance's family-friendly itinerary includes visits to Agra and Jaipur. This visit occurs against the backdrop of heightened trade disputes between the US and other nations, following President Trump's imposement of steep tariffs, including a 27% tariff on India which was temporarily paused in April. While India has reduced tariffs on specific US goods, the trade balance still significantly favors India, boasting a $45 billion surplus.Historically, the US has been India's largest trading partner, with bilateral trade peaking at $190 billion. Modi and Trump previously set ambitious goals to increase this to $500 billion, sparking hopes for more deals in oil, gas, and other sectors. As Vance's tour unfolds, the anticipation grows for Trump's planned visit to India later this year for the Quad summit alongside leaders from Australia and Japan. India's foreign ministry expressed optimism that Vance’s visit will boost bilateral relations, indicating a focused approach to navigating the ongoing tariff issues and expanding economic cooperation.
