In brief
Former Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak returned to Kajang Prison on Friday after undergoing a medical examination and paying a 50‑million‑ringgit fine linked to his SRC International corruption case. While a court had issued a house‑arrest order, Malaysia’s Attorney General’s Chambers deferred the transfer pending further legal clarification, keeping Najib in detention. The move follows a 12‑year sentence that was later reduced to six years and a fine cut from 210 to 50 million ringgit, reflecting ongoing legal developments.
Former Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak returned to Kajang Prison on Friday evening after a medical examination, according to local media reports.
He had paid the 50‑million‑ringgit (about 12.3 million U.S. dollars) fine linked to his SRC International Sdn Bhd corruption case, fulfilling a condition of a conditional pardon, said Berita Harian and Malaysian national news agency Bernama.
Najib’s lawyer, Farhan Shafee, confirmed that a court had issued him a house‑arrest order. However, the Attorney General’s Chambers announced the implementation of that order would be temporarily deferred while further legal clarification is sought, keeping him at his detention facility.
Malaysia’s Attorney General’s Chambers said:
The implementation of Najib’s house arrest has been temporarily deferred pending further legal clarification. Najib should remain at his existing detention facility in the meantime, subject to instructions and orders from the relevant authorities.
Najib has been imprisoned since August 2022 for abuse of power related to SRC International, a unit of the state investment fund 1MDB. An earlier 2024 decision reduced his 12‑year sentence to six years and lowered the fine from 210 to 50 million ringgit.
The postponed house‑arrest move reflects ongoing legal scrutiny over Najib’s royal pardon and the conditions surrounding it. Authorities will determine next steps while he stays in Kajang Prison.
