A man charged with multiple shootings near Atlanta, which resulted in three fatalities, including a Department of Homeland Security employee, died in jail late Tuesday. Olaolukitan Adon Abel, 26, was discovered unresponsive in his cell, and although medical treatment was rendered, he was declared dead at the hospital.
The exact cause of death is yet to be determined, but authorities have indicated there’s no suspicion of foul play and are carrying out an internal review.
Abel had been charged with the murders of Prianna Weathers and Lauren Bullis during last week’s violent attacks. The police are now investigating an additional murder charge after another victim, Tony Mathews, succumbed to injuries last Sunday.
Officials have yet to confirm a motive behind the shootings, raising concerns about whether Abel had any connection to the victims, as at least one attack appeared random.
Following his death, Abel's public defender expressed regret that he won’t have the chance to contest the charges. “This is an immense loss for everybody affected by the tragedy,” the defender stated.
Adon Abel was involved in a violent incident shortly before the shootings, reportedly stemming from a dispute with his roommates. He had a prior history of legal issues, having served in the U.S. Navy and being granted citizenship in 2022. The events surrounding his arrest and subsequent death have drawn widespread media attention and public interest in the unfolding narrative.
