In a historic move, Israeli prosecutors charged settler Yinon Levy for the July 2025 shooting that killed Palestinian activist Odeh Hathaleen in the occupied West Bank. According to the Southern District Prosecutor’s Office, Levy was charged with reckless manslaughter, armed trespassing and malicious property damage.
The case is the first indictment in nearly three years for a settler killing a Palestinian, prompting the rights group B’Tselem to call it a “turning point” in confronting impunity. A lawyer for Hathaleen’s family said the charges could signal new consequences for settlers.
Hathaleen was a prominent voice against settler violence and featured in the Oscar‑winning 2025 documentary No Other Land, which chronicles the legal battle over the small community of Masafer Yatta. The Supreme Court’s 2022 ruling allowed the demolition of homes and the expulsion of more than 1,000 villagers.
Levy denied firing the fatal shot, insisting the prosecution had misinterpreted self‑defence. He has previously faced sanctions from the UK and the US for violent acts in the West Bank.
The indictment follows a spike in settler attacks after Israel’s October 2023 Hamas‑led assault, during which the death toll in the West Bank rose to over 1,110 Palestinians. International observers see the case as both a signal of changing legal attitudes and a potential flashpoint for escalating tensions.
