In the early hours of Tuesday, a massive mound of rubbish from a Conakry waste site collapsed onto nearby houses, resulting in at least 30 fatalities and 22 injuries. Heavy rainfall the night before likely contributed to the instability of the landfill. Military and emergency forces have deployed to search for survivors, using excavators to sift through the debris pile. Local officials, including Prime Minister Mamadou Oury Bah, have visited the scene and urged the public to stay safe. The incident follows a previous 2017 landslide that killed 10 people, underscoring the ongoing dangers of unmanaged waste sites.

30 Deaths in Guinea Landfill Collapse

At least 30 people lost their lives when a landfill mound collapsed over homes in Conakry’s Dar‑es‑Salam area early Tuesday morning.

Heavy rain overnight weakened the rubbish pile, and at roughly 2 a.m. the mass tipped onto adjacent houses, trapping residents underneath. 22 people were injured, six of them seriously, prompting emergency teams and the military to rush to the scene.

Local officials said the Prime Minister Mamadou Oury Bah has visited the crash site, while neighbourhood leader Lancine Sylla spoke to AFP, warning that more bodies could be buried under the debris. 18 bodies were already transported to the morgue.

Rescue crews are using excavators to dig through the wreckage. A woman told local media her five children died in the disaster, heightening fears that the death toll could rise further.

The site’s unstable condition has caused repeated tragedies, including a 2017 landslide that killed ten people.
