In brief
Seven bodies were brought to a helipad in Uttarkashi after a multi‑agency rescue mission hindered by avalanches. Authorities plan to hand them over to families while the search for the last missing trekker proceeds.
Seven dead trekkers were recovered from the Kedartal trail in Uttarkashi district, Uttarakhand, after they disappeared on Oct. 29. The bodies were found over the last few days and a local government official announced their retrieval on Nov. 6.
The party of eight, which included a trekking guide, had mainly come from West Bengal. They were caught in a storm that caused heavy snowfall and several avalanches along the trail.
The rescue operation, carried out by several agencies, faced repeated setbacks because of the harsh weather conditions. The bodies were eventually air‑lifted to Matli Helipad in Uttarkashi.
Local authorities are arranging for the recovered bodies to be handed over to the trekkers’ families. The officials pledged a respectful return of the remains.
One trekker remains missing, and the search operation continues. The authorities have not yet identified the person’s fate or location. The ongoing efforts aim to locate the final missing party member amid the same dangerous conditions that caused the avalanche.
