Japan’s electric vehicle sales surpassed 100,000 units for the first time in 2026, reaching 111,876 vehicles in the first ten months, a figure reported by Xinhua. The government, which offers up to 1.3 million yen in subsidies, said it may close the current subsidy program in December and reduce subsidy amounts starting in January 2027.

Japan’s electric vehicle sales topped 100,000 units in the first 10 months of 2026, breaking the threshold for the first time, reports Xinhua.

According to the Japan Automobile Dealers Association and the Japan Light Motor Vehicle and Motorcycle Association, sales totaled 111,876 vehicles, with 95,614 standard and compact passenger cars and 16,262 ultracompact models.

The Japanese government currently provides subsidies of up to 1.3 million yen (about 8,200 U.S. dollars) for EV purchases, but amid strong sales, it expects the current subsidy program to close as early as December and plans to reduce subsidy amounts from January 2027.
