In brief
In central Gaza, a sand cliff collapsed on a tent shelter, killing five people, including three children. The collapse followed a heavy rainfall that had already flooded tens of thousands of tents. Rescue teams are searching for missing persons and dealing with a worsening humanitarian crisis.
On Sunday night in Deir al-Balah, a sand cliff collapsed onto a tent shelter, killing five Palestinians, three of them children, and injuring others. The incident occurred after a severe rainfall that had already flooded about 70,000 tents across Gaza, according to Xinhua.
Deir al-Balah in central Gaza was the site of the collapse, as reported by the Gaza Civil Defense spokesperson Mahmoud Basal. He said the cliff fell onto the tents at a shelter center because of the heavy rain.
"The cliff collapsed on tents at a shelter center due to heavy rain," said Basal.
Basal added that the five people killed included a woman, and that several others were seriously injured. Rescue teams were continuing their search for missing individuals after the storm.
The flooding that preceded the collapse was part of a low‑pressure weather system that hit Gaza, forcing many displaced families into tents that were not built to withstand the intense rain. The situation is worsening, and the rescue effort is a stark reminder of the difficult living conditions in the region.
