In brief

A new engineering marvel, the Fehmarnbelt tunnel, spanning 18 km, is currently being constructed beneath the Baltic Sea, connecting Denmark and Germany. This ambitious project will be the world’s longest pre-fabricated road and rail tunnel, drastically reducing travel times.

The tunnel consists of large segments manufactured on the coast of Lolland, Denmark, that will be placed on the seafloor and connected. With a staggering budget of €7.4 billion (approx. $8.1 billion), the tunnel will cut the journey from a 45-minute ferry ride to just 10 minutes by car and 7 minutes by train. This initiative promises to connect Scandinavia with Central Europe, offering more efficient travel and reduced carbon emissions. The project is slated for completion in 2029, with high hopes for boosting the local economy in Denmark's Lolland region. Plus, a 300-hectare wetlands initiative is set to counterbalance ecological concerns raised during the planning process.
