Sri Lanka's navy and air force have launched a search for seven missing fishermen after two fishing vessels vanished along the southern and northeastern coasts.

One boat carrying four men left Kudawella near Matara on Oct. 21. Its last contact was October 23, after which its owner reported it missing.

The navy began a search with air force help, scanning the area for wreckage.

A second 3‑man boat departed from Puthumathalan in Mullaitivu but has not been located.

Naval crews are still looking for both vessels and the crews that remain aboard.

Xinhua reports the search faces strong winds, rough seas, and heavy thundershowers linked to a Bay of Bengal cyclone.

The Department of Meteorology warned fishermen and naval vessels to suspend activities in affected sea areas until further notice.

It urged those already at sea to move toward safer waters.

Rescue teams have coordinated by using ships and aircraft to sweep the large search zone.

Officials say the storm could hide wreckage that explains the disappearances, and they appeal to fishermen to stay clear of the zone for safety.

No survivors have been found yet, and families await updates.

The navy said it will keep the public informed as weather improves and search continues daily.

The last known GPS coordinates were near 5°30′S.

If the boats sank, divers will search for wreckage.

The navy is also checking satellite imagery for clues.
