A senior bomb disposal official was killed on Saturday while attempting to defuse an improvised explosive device in Upper South Waziristan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Police confirmed he had previously neutralized a device before the second detonated, and he succumbed to critical injuries. District police officer Ashfaq Khan provided the death update to local media.

An assistant head of Pakistan’s police bomb disposal squad was killed Saturday in an IED explosion in the Sararogha area of Upper South Waziristan, in the north‑western province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The blast occurred after the officer had successfully defused an earlier device in the same area, according to district police officials.

Police said the officer was attempting to neutralise a second improvised explosive device when the bomb detonated, leading to critical injuries.

He held the rank of assistant head in the national police’s bomb disposal unit, a position that involves high‑risk clearance work in conflict‑torn zones.

Security officials in the region have warned that attacks by insurgent groups continue to target law‑enforcement personnel, especially in the tribal areas of Upper South Waziristan.

The incident highlights the ongoing danger faced by bomb disposal teams, who must balance rapid response against the risk of accidental detonation.

District police officer Ashfaq Khan told local media that the official sustained critical injuries in the explosion and later succumbed to them.

"The official sustained critical injuries in the explosion and later succumbed to them," Ashfaq Khan said to local media.

The police thanked the fallen officer for his service and pledged to continue patrolling the area to prevent further attacks.
