In brief

Hurricane Humberto, a Category 2 storm, is closing in on Bermuda, bringing with it maximum sustained winds of 100 mph. The island is under a hurricane watch as Humberto is expected to cause heavy rainfall along with hazardous seas. Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Imelda is expected to follow closely, potentially impacting Bermuda on Wednesday. Authorities are urging the public to be prepared for severe weather, including flash flooding and strong winds. In Cuba, prior impacts from Imelda have resulted in two fatalities.

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — The outer bands of Hurricane Humberto lashed Bermuda on Tuesday as it approached the tiny British territory, with newly formed Hurricane Imelda following closely behind.

A hurricane watch was in effect for Bermuda as forecasters warned of dangerous seas, strong winds, and heavy rain.

Humberto was located approximately 275 miles west of Bermuda, boasting maximum sustained winds of 100 mph and moving north-northwest at 17 mph, as reported by the National Hurricane Center in Miami.

While Humberto is set to pass well west and north of Bermuda, Imelda is predicted to come near or over the island on Wednesday afternoon as a Category 2 hurricane.

Michael Weeks, Bermuda’s minister of national security, stated that residents should brace for a “serious week of weather.”

Authorities urge preparedness as Humberto could drop up to 2 inches and Imelda up to 4 inches of rain. The storm is also creating dangerous swells impacting the northern Caribbean and the U.S. East Coast.

In Cuba, Tropical Storm Imelda has already taken a toll, resulting in two fatalities, while flooding and landslides have disrupted life for thousands in the region.
