Ukrainian Spy Denies Killing Monaco Bomb Suspect, Blames Partner
A Ukrainian intelligence officer, Vladyslav Reut, had once told investigators he killed Anastasiia Berezovska, who was suspected of a bomb plot targeting a multimillionaire in Monaco. In a recent court hearing in Kyiv, Reut reversed that confession, denying he pulled the trigger and accusing former SBU officer Vitalii Zhykovych of carrying out the murder.
Reut, 34, is a decorated GUR agent, while Zhykovych, 50, worked for the SBU until recently. Both men were handcuffed and surrounded by armed guards during their hearings, their faces obscured by masks, a scene that underscored the case’s tense nature.
The investigation began when investigators found Berezovska’s phone records and financial transactions linked both men to her, after her arrival in Ukraine two days after the Monaco incident. Reut initially confessed, then later claimed he only guided investigators to the burial site and that Zhykovych fired four shots at her.
Despite Reut’s claims, prosecutors argue that both men acted jointly and file pre‑meditated murder charges. Neither suspect has been granted bail and remains in custody while the investigation continues. Officials are looking into all potential motives, including Russian influence and connections to organised crime.
Press statements from President Zelensky and the prosecutor indicate that more evidence will be released in the coming days.
