A fire at a popular nightclub in India's coastal region of Goa has killed 25 people, local officials say. Police had initially thought a gas cylinder in the Birch nightclub's kitchen exploded, but the region's chief minister ruled that out, suggesting that indoor fireworks were the cause.

The venue was packed with partygoers enjoying a night out with a Bollywood DJ when the fire broke out. Among the deceased are four members of the same Delhi family and 21 staff members. Authorities have arrested four individuals, including the nightclub’s manager and have issued an arrest warrant for the owner.

Goa, known for its vibrant nightlife, draws millions of tourists, making such incidents alarming for both locals and visitors. Eyewitnesses recounted horrific scenes as screams filled the air, and chaos ensued. One witness described how a typical Saturday night turned frightening as fire engulfed the club.

Emergency responders faced challenges in reaching the location due to a narrow passage over a small lake leading to the club. The aftermath saw charred remains of the club's interior, showcasing the devastating effects of the inferno.

Goa’s chief minister reported that most victims died from suffocation rather than burns, with several individuals still hospitalized in stable condition. The tragedy has sparked discussions regarding the safety regulations of entertainment venues, with opposition politicians urging tighter controls to prevent similar disasters.

India has seen multiple deadly fires in public places in recent years, raising significant concerns about safety standards. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his grief over the incident via social media.
