Incident Overview: A Swiss tourist, Luzian Andrin Zgraggen, filmed himself walking on a deserted beach during Bali’s annual Day of Silence (Nyepi) and described the situation as "crazy," a move that upset local residents.
The footage, posted by the tourist, sparked immediate criticism on social media, especially among Balinese residents who feel deeply about the holiday’s restrictions, which include closing the airport, cutting internet services, and prohibiting loud noises.
Zgraggen was arrested in March, after violating the holiday’s ban on outdoor activities. He was found guilty and sentenced to a year in prison.
The judge remarked that the tourist’s remarks offended the faithful community and provoked public outrage. In court, Zgraggen expressed remorse and apologized, saying he had not understood the depth of the restrictions.
Tourism on Bali, which welcomed a record seven million international visitors last year, has seen increased incidents of cultural disrespect and legal infractions, prompting local authorities to impose tighter scrutiny and harsher penalties on unruly tourists.
