The family of Nolan Wells, an 18‑year‑old from Mississippi, is demanding answers after his body was found off Horn Island. He disappeared following a boating trip on 4 July, and his body was recovered two days later.
Jackson County authorities said there was no sign of foul play, but they urged anyone who witnessed anything on the island that day to contact the sheriff’s office. An initial autopsy was already done, yet its findings have not yet been released.
Civil‑rights lawyer Ben Crump, hired by the family, has requested an independent autopsy and highlighted gaps in the witness accounts. He says there are contradictory reports about whether Wells left the island with friends or stayed behind.
Nolan’s mother Christine Wonsley began searching for him after he did not return. His father Elmore Wonsley insisted that Nolan would not have chosen to remain alone on the island. The family says these details are crucial to understanding the circumstances of his death.
The sensation of Horn Island—including its lack of staff, drinking water and communication—has been remarked upon by the National Park Service. Police are still asking the public for pictures, videos or witness statements that could clarify the events of July 4.
