JACKSON, Miss. (SnapScope) — In a shocking incident that highlights ongoing issues of hate and intolerance, the FBI has charged Stephen Spencer Pittman with setting fire to the Beth Israel Congregation, acknowledging that he targeted the synagogue because of its 'Jewish ties.' The blaze, which erupted shortly after 3 a.m. last Saturday, was captured on security cameras showing the suspect pouring gasoline and igniting the building. Fortunately, no one was injured.

Pittman's confession during questioning revealed his derogatory views toward the congregation, referring to it as the 'synagogue of Satan.' He had previously stopped to purchase the accelerant and later admitted to breaking windows to gain access for the fire.

The arson has devastated the small Jewish community, making it difficult for them to preserve their heritage in Mississippi. The synagogue, which also houses vital community resources, is now facing significant repairs, but leaders like President Zach Shemper express determination to rebuild. Amidst the damaged property and community shock, a spirit of resilience shines through as various local churches offer temporary spaces to support their services during reconstruction.
