FBI arrests woman over alleged plot to bomb New York Capitol
The FBI has arrested Jessica Bowie, 35, who allegedly planned to bomb the New York state capitol building in Albany to kill lawmakers. Prosecutors say she pledged allegiance to the Islamic State group (IS) and was charged with providing material support or resources to a designated foreign terrorist organization.
Bowie allegedly surveilled the capitol repeatedly and carried a fake bomb and a defective gun supplied by undercover agents. She told agents, "I want to destroy as much of the building as possible and kill the senators."
She was also found carrying knives, a written oath of allegiance to IS, and a DoorDash delivery bag that could conceal a bomb. Agents allegedly provided her with $200 to purchase bomb‑making materials at a Home Depot, which she used to pick "the right kind of nails" for shrapnel. She confirmed her intent during undercover encounters, stating she wanted the impact to "have an effect on the American system."
Bowie, a frequent social media user, has been banned from several platforms for praising the 9/11 attacks and espousing anti‑American messages. Her membership in social media was reportedly banned for violating terms of service.
"I'm grateful to the FBI for leading this investigation," the New York Governor said on X, after confirming the arrest. He added that stronger security measures were being enacted following a rise in political violence and threats against public officials.
The case remains pending. It is unclear whether Bowie will fight the charges. The FBI and New York State Police close the chapter on this plot, raising questions about extremist recruitment in the United States.
