Franco Baresi, the legendary AC Milan captain and 18th‑century Italian defender, died at 66. He spent his whole 20‑year career with Milan, winning six Serie A titles and three Champions Leagues. Baresi earned 81 caps for Italy and was part of the 1982 World Cup‑winning squad, later playing in the 1994 final. In 2020 he was made honorary vice‑president of Milan and his number 6 shirt was retired. The club mourned his loss, reflecting on his enduring legacy and integrity.

Franco Baresi – former AC Milan captain and Italy national hero – passed away on 30 June 2026 at the age of 66.

Baresi spent a remarkable 20‑year playing career with AC Milan, from 1977 to 1997, winning six Serie A titles, three European Cups and a Champions League trophy. He was captain for 15 seasons, racking up 719 appearances and netting 33 goals, a testament to his endurance and leadership.

Internationally, the versatile defender earned 81 caps for Italy, helping his country secure the 1982 World Cup, and he featured in the 1994 final against Brazil.

After retiring, Baresi remained closely tied to the club – in 2020 he was appointed honorary vice‑president, and in 2024 Milan retired his iconic number 6 shirt.

Following surgery in August 2025 to remove a lung nodule, Baresi’s last public appearance was at the San Siro Stadium during the Winter Olympics opening ceremony in February 2026.
