In brief

The U.S. President's statement comes after South Africa adopts a bill allowing land expropriation without compensation.

Former U.S. President Donald Trump recently announced he would cut all future funding to South Africa, citing concerns over the country’s new land reform policy. The policy, signed into law by President Cyril Ramaphosa last month, allows for land seizures without compensation under specific circumstances. This law has reignited a long-standing debate in South Africa about land ownership, which remains largely in the hands of white citizens decades after the end of apartheid. Many believe land reform is necessary to rectify historical racial inequalities, leading to calls for action from the government. In a post on social media platform Truth Social, Trump stated that he would cease all funding until a thorough investigation into South Africa’s actions is conducted. He criticized the South African government, calling their treatment of land ownership “terrible” and “horrible.” Responding to Trump, South Africa's International Relations Minister Ronald Lamola expressed hope that U.S. officials would work to truly understand the country’s policies within its democratic framework. Despite concerns from critics, the South African government insists that the new law does not permit arbitrary land confiscation. The current approach allows negotiations with property owners before making any expropriation decisions. Nevertheless, fears persist regarding possible negative effects similar to those experienced in Zimbabwe, where similar land policies led to economic disaster.
