In brief
The streaming giant faces scrutiny over its tax practices in Europe, with simultaneous raids in Paris and Amsterdam.
Netflix's European offices were raided by French and Dutch authorities as part of a growing investigation into potential tax fraud. The raids happened early Tuesday morning, as officials from both countries have been collaborating since November 2022. Currently, the focus is on accusations related to covering up serious tax fraud and conducting off-the-books work, according to the French National Financial Prosecutor's office (PNF).Authorities are examining Netflix's tax filings for the years 2019, 2020, and 2021, and have noted a significant rise in reported revenue once the company revised its tax strategy. Prior to 2021, Netflix reported a modest annual turnover of just €47.1 million ($51.3 million) in France, but that figure shot up to a staggering €1.2 billion ($1.3 billion) in 2021 after changing its operational approach in France. The company has yet to provide detailed comments about the raids but maintains that it follows the tax regulations of every country it operates within. Netflix, which launched its Paris office in 2020 and boasts a subscriber base of approximately 10 million in France, faces serious implications depending on the investigation's outcome. The scrutiny reflects increasing global attention on corporations' tax practices, especially powerful entities like Netflix.
