In brief
A gold pocket watch given to Sir Arthur Rostron, captain of the RMS Carpathia, has been auctioned for a staggering £1.56 million ($1.97 million), marking the highest sale ever for Titanic memorabilia.
The unique 18-carat Tiffany & Co timepiece was gifted to Sir Arthur by grateful survivors after he rescued over 700 passengers from the Titanic disaster in 1912. The auction, hosted by Henry Aldridge and Son in Wiltshire, showcased the continuing allure of the Titanic story. When the RMS Carpathia received distress signals from the Titanic, which had struck an iceberg, Sir Arthur immediately altered its course to assist. He arrived two hours after the Titanic sank, saving hundreds from the frigid waters of the North Atlantic. The watch was presented to Rostron by three widows of wealthy Titanic passengers, adorned with an inscription that expresses deep gratitude for his heroic deeds. Auctioneer Andrew Aldridge noted the growing interest in Titanic memorabilia, highlighting that the record sale demonstrates a limited supply alongside a rising demand for these historical artifacts. Earlier this year, another Titanic-associated watch was sold for £1.175 million, and these recent sales reflect an enduring fascination with one of history's most infamous maritime tragedies.
