In brief

Amidst a growing demand for unique coffee experiences, new cafes are redefining social spaces in northern cities.

Coffee is taking northern India by storm, challenging long-standing tea traditions and creating a vibrant specialty scene. Harmanpreet Singh, a former bakery owner in Jalandhar, recognized this opportunity during the pandemic and opened Buland Café in 2021. His journey started with training in Bengaluru to master brewing techniques and creating an inviting atmosphere.Today, Buland Café has expanded to 40 locations, catering to the youth's desire for a cozy place to enjoy quality coffee. The trend isn’t just limited to Jalandhar; cities like Ludhiana and Lucknow are also witnessing a surge in trendy coffee shops that offer a mix of traditional flavors with modern twists.Coffee consumption has soared, with over 44% of Indians now enjoying this beverage. Experts highlight a significant shift towards specialty coffee preferences, with custom blends and roasting techniques attracting more coffee connoisseurs. This evolving culture aligns with remote work trends, as coffee spots become popular meeting places. However, the rise of coffee shops brings challenges, including competition and the necessity for quality. New cafe owners strive to balance customer experience with financial constraints. As entrepreneurs like Nishant Sinha and Jatin Khurana experiment with flavors and ambiance, they're also reshaping what a café means to small-town communities, blending local traditions with global coffee trends.
