In brief

On Nov. 1, protests in Frankfurt, Berlin and Hamburg turned violent after police accused about 100 left‑wing extremists of provoking rioting. The clashes involved shop break‑ins, Molotov cocktails, water cannons, arson and led to dozens of arrests and injuries. Protest organizers denied any role in the violence.

On Nov. 1, anti‑cost‑of‑living protests in Frankfurt, Berlin and Hamburg erupted into violence, police said, blaming a handful of left‑wing extremists for inciting the clashes.

Civilian demonstrators and a small group of militants, police reported, shattered shop windows, threw Molotov cocktails at officials and set crowd‑control barriers ablaze in Hamburg. In Frankfurt, a water cannon was used to disperse the crowd and at least 30 people were detained. Berlin saw 60 arrests and 27 police officers injured.

Interior minister for Hesse state Roman Poseck identified “around 100 clearly identified left‑wing extremists” who joined the protest in Frankfurt, prompting the violence and looting.

“Around 100 clearly identified left‑wing extremists” joined protesters in Frankfurt, prompting violence and looting.

German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt told Bild that, in addition to these left‑wing groups, “troublemakers from migrant communities” were also involved in the violence.

Organisers of the demonstrations, the Gen Z Regelt group, said they had no influence on actions after the protests ended. A spokesperson told Der Spiegel, “We had no influence on what happened after the demonstrations ended.”

The protests, which called for higher spending on education and action on climate change, were inspired by similar demonstrations in France that last month also turned violent.
