In brief
Singapore and Argentina officially activated the Mercosur‑Singapore Free Trade Agreement, completing its rollout with all four Mercosur members. The pact cuts tariffs on 96 % of goods over 15 years and opens key sectors such as food, energy, and technology to new business opportunities.
On Sunday, Nov. 2, Singapore and Argentina completed the final step of the Mercosur‑Singapore Free Trade Agreement, bringing the deal into force with all four Mercosur member states.
The agreement removes import duties on around 96 % of traded products over up to fifteen years, with about one‑quarter of tariff categories gaining immediate duty‑free treatment.
Under the pact, Singapore and Argentina will now trade goods, services, investment, government procurement, digital commerce, intellectual property, and economic cooperation under common rules of origin and clearer customs procedures.
According to a joint statement by Singapore's Ministry of Energy, Trade and Industry and the Argentinian Embassy in Singapore, “Argentina’s position as a major agricultural and food producer supports Singapore’s efforts to diversify food import sources and strengthen food resilience. There are also opportunities in sectors such as energy, infrastructure, logistics, technology and services.”
The deal is seen as a major step for Singapore’s economic ties with Latin America, giving Singapore access to Argentina’s robust food market and opening markets in energy and technology for both sides.
