In brief

A surprising heatwave has gripped Southern Europe, with temperatures expected to peak at 42°C, prompting health warnings and emergency preparations across Italy, Greece, Spain, and beyond.

Southern Europe is experiencing an early and intense heatwave, stirring health warnings and emergency protocols in multiple countries, including Spain, Italy, and Greece. The mercury is set to hit 42°C in Seville this weekend, fueled by hot air from North Africa. Staff are on alert in Spain for a rise in heatstroke cases, particularly among vulnerable groups. "June heat is surprising," noted Marina, a 22-year-old Madrilenian, expressing concern over the unusual temperatures. In Italy, authorities warn residents to stay indoors during peak heat hours, as many cities endure extreme conditions. Meanwhile, France faces a continuing heatwave, with orange alerts issued in the southern regions. To combat the heat, Marseille opened municipal pools for free. Even in England, temperatures are predicted to reach 35°C, prompting yellow and amber alerts. Sadly, wildfires have already broken out in Greece, where some coastal towns near Athens faced evacuations. Although linking heatwaves directly to climate change is complex, scientists indicate that such extreme weather is becoming increasingly common, with current June heatwaves being ten times more likely than in the past.
