In brief

Saudi Arabia and its allies aim to raise output, impacting consumers and producers alike.

Oil prices have taken a dive, hitting their lowest mark this year, following the announcement from OPEC Plus that they plan to increase oil production starting in April. The cartel, led by Saudi Arabia and Russia, intends to add 2.2 million barrels per day, about 2% of the global demand, to the market over several months. While this move might mean lower energy costs for consumers, it poses a challenge for oil producers, potentially causing a drop in profit margins. U.S. oil prices fell to $68.37 per barrel, a price that remains profitable for many U.S. oil projects. However, oil production is not as feasible below $60 a barrel.OPEC Plus has previously delayed production increases due to worries over oversupply and falling prices, making traders cautious about the new announcement. Analysts suggest that the recent decision is more about responding to political pressure, particularly from the Trump administration, than from rising global demand. President Trump has pushed for lower energy prices since his campaign, aiming to decrease costs significantly. He indicated in January that he would engage with Saudi Arabia and OPEC to make that happen, expressing surprise they hadn't acted sooner.OPEC has signaled that it will remain flexible and adjust production plans in response to market conditions, aiming to maintain oil market stability amid fluctuating prices.
