In brief
A shocking Embassy shooting has reignited discussion on antisemitism and global tensions.
Israeli officials and the public were left in shock Thursday following a tragic shooting at the Israeli Embassy in Washington, D.C., which resulted in the deaths of two embassy staff members. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned the act as an “appalling antisemitic murder.” The incident occurred as the victims, identified as Sarah Lynn Milgrim and Yaron Lischinsky, were leaving a function at the Capital Jewish Museum. According to police reports, a suspect was detained nearby, reportedly chanting “Free, free Palestine” upon arrest. Milgrim was known for organizing missions to Israel while Lischinsky was a researcher with ambitions of a diplomatic career. Friends described Lischinsky as “incredibly talented” and deeply passionate about his role at the embassy. Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar attributed the shooting to a rise in antisemitic rhetoric that has been exacerbated by the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict, emphasizing the consequences of “toxic antisemitic incitement” prevalent since October 2023.
