In brief

Peng Yujiang's terrifying ascent was caught on camera, bringing him face-to-face with nature's power.

In a jaw-dropping incident, a 55-year-old Chinese paraglider, Peng Yujiang, found himself soaring to an astonishing height of 8,500 meters (27,800 feet) above northwest China. What began as a routine equipment test at 3,000 meters over the scenic Qilian mountains quickly turned into an unexpected adventure when a rare air current known as "cloud suck" yanked him upward, sending chills down his spine. This thrilling event was captured on camera, and the footage has since gone viral on Douyin, the Chinese counterpart to TikTok. In the video, viewers can see a visibly shaken Peng, with his face almost encased in ice crystals, struggling to maintain control of his glider. “It was terrifying... Everything was white. Without the compass, I wouldn’t have known which way I was going,” he stated, reflecting on the disorienting and icy conditions. At such altitudes, the air is thin and oxygen levels drop dangerously low, with temperatures plummeting to a chilling -40°C—only slightly lower than Mount Everest's peak! Peng described the sensation of being spun around in the air during his descent and admitted to potentially losing consciousness at some point. Chinese authorities are currently investigating the incident, and as a precautionary measure, Peng has been suspended from flying for six months due to the unauthorized nature of the flight. He originally intended to remain grounded that day to test the parachute's fit and comfort but was unexpectedly lifted into the skies by powerful winds. Now, he’s back on solid ground, recounting a tale that truly shows the awe and unpredictability of nature!
