In brief

The EU has signed a significant trade deal with four South American countries, promising to lower tariffs and improve trading conditions. This historic agreement comes after previous negotiations faltered due to environmental concerns.

The European Union has reached a groundbreaking trade agreement with four of South America's leading economies, marking a significant step in enhancing cross-continental ties. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen hailed the deal as a "truly historic milestone" in response to rising global tensions. This follows an earlier 2019 agreement that never materialized due to lack of EU ratification amid environmental worries. If ratified, this new deal will lower tariffs and simplify customs for businesses trading between the EU and South American nations, facilitating easier access to vital raw materials. It is expected to boost job creation and offer consumers more choices at better prices. Last year, trade between the regions reached nearly $116 billion, with exports from the EU including cars and pharmaceuticals, while South America's major exports included minerals crucial for electric vehicle batteries. The agreement unites 700 million consumers and is anticipated to benefit small businesses, particularly in the Mercosur region comprising Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay. While Uruguay's President Luis Lacalle Pou recognized challenges ahead, he stressed the importance of trade for Mercosur’s smaller economies. Despite enthusiasm, resistance remains from countries like France and Poland due to fears of unfair competition in agriculture. Germany is pushing for compromise, recognizing the trade agreement as a crucial opportunity amidst economic uncertainty.
