In brief
The brutal killing of renowned Ugandan athlete Benjamin Kiplagat has led to significant legal consequences for his murderers, with both sentenced to 35 years in prison.
In a shocking turn of events, a Kenyan court has sentenced two men, Peter Ushuru Khalumi and David Ekai Lokere, to 35 years each for the murder of Ugandan Olympian Benjamin Kiplagat. The 34-year-old steeplechaser was tragically killed on New Year’s Eve in Eldoret, a popular training spot for athletes. During the sentencing, Justice Reuben Nyakundi condemned their actions as “cruel” against a “defenceless person.” The court revealed that the murder was premeditated; CCTV footage showed the defendants chasing Kiplagat before the fatal attack. Kiplagat's mother expressed her heartbreak in court, recounting her son’s journey from running barefoot to representing Uganda in the Olympics. Although she sought life sentences for the killers, the family was relieved to see justice served. Kiplagat, a proud record-holder for Uganda, had competed in multiple Olympic Games and was a significant figure in athletics. The incident highlights ongoing concerns for the safety of athletes in the region.
