Images of Pope Francis's tomb at the Santa Maria Maggiore church in Rome have surfaced following his public funeral. The late pope was laid to eternal rest in a private ceremony, marked by a poignant display of a single white rose atop the stone tomb, reflecting his name and illuminated by a gentle spotlight.
The church, renowned as one of the city's main basilicas, was frequently visited by Pope Francis during his lifetime. Since Sunday morning, crowds have flocked to pay their respects at his grave after his demise at age 88 earlier this week.
Visitors shared emotional sentiments at the site. Italian mourner Rosario Correale expressed the significant impact Francis had on many lives. "He really left a mark on us," he stated, highlighting the powerful connection many felt. Polish pilgrim Maria Brzezinska believed that the simplicity of the tomb truly represented the humility and character of the pope.
Santa Maria Maggiore, being the first church dedicated to the Virgin Mary, holds a special place in Francis's heart as he often drew inspiration from her, mentioning his wish to be buried there back in 2022.
The funeral was attended by a diverse group of dignitaries from around the globe, paying tribute to Francis's legacy of building bridges and advocating peace. Following the funeral, the hearse—a repurposed popemobile—was showcased to a crowd of 140,000 who gathered as it passed iconic landmarks of Rome.
As this chapter closes, the focus will soon shift to selecting the next pope, with the process potentially starting as early as May 5 or 6, during which 135 cardinals will convene.
