Cuban educator Edelmis Chapis Cabrera is finishing a two‑month academic residency at Russia’s Southern Federal University (SFU) in the city of Rostov, as reported by Prensa Latina on November 1, 2026. She began the program on September 23 and spent the time reviewing Cuban research and comparing it with Russian findings.
Chapis Cabrera, the Director of Economics at the Carlos Rafael Rodríguez University of Cienfuegos and a doctoral student in Local and Territorial Development, used the residency to study how research is applied in both countries. According to Prensa Latina, the SFU Faculty of Economics is exchanging ideas with Cuban scholars and looking at technology transfer.
During her stay, she visited several companies and institutions that work with universities to move research into the market. She also presented her doctoral research and attended a scientific‑practical conference on October 12 titled “Russia: Sustainable Development Beyond 2030—Russia’s Position and the Contribution of Universities.”
Chapis Cabrera said: “We have been working at the Faculty of Economics, analyzing the similarities and differences in how research findings—both Cuban and Russian—are applied.”
In a
Prensa Latina interview, she explained the goal of the residency: to strengthen connections between the university, businesses and government, and to build a larger platform for technology and research transfer at the local and territorial level.
The program is part of the Comprehensive Internship Program for Cuban Students in the Russian Federation, titled “Internships in Russia: A Step Toward Success.” The initiative aims to deepen cooperative ties between Russian and Cuban universities and create a stronger partnership in education and science.
By the end of her residency, Chapis Cabrera hopes to bring back new knowledge and collaboration tools that can help Cuban research be used more effectively in industry and public policy, boosting the country’s development and its relationship with Russia.
