In brief
The Canadian federal government announced on Oct. 31 that the Roberts Bank Terminal 2 expansion at Vancouver’s main port would receive national-interest listing, with a $5.9‑billion investment expected to add 50% more container capacity. The expansion is part of a plan to double non‑U.S. exports by 2035, accelerating the project’s timeline and aiming for a final investment decision by mid‑2027.
On October 31, the Canadian federal government announced that the Roberts Bank Terminal 2 expansion at the Port of Vancouver would be listed as a national‑interest project.
The project carries a planned investment of 5.9 billion Canadian dollars (about 4.2 billion U.S. dollars), aiming to enlarge the port’s container capacity by roughly 50 percent.
The expansion is set to add 2.4 million containers of annual processing capacity, helping the port move more goods in a single trip.
Transport Canada said the project can support up to 100 billion Canadian dollars in annual trade, roughly 71.55 billion U.S. dollars.
“It’s part of a strategy to double Canada’s exports to non‑U.S. markets by 2035,” Transport Canada noted.
The listing gives the project regulatory certainty and is expected to bring commercial operations into full use by 2035—up to four years ahead of the original schedule.
The project is on track to reach a final investment decision by mid‑2027, a step that will unlock more funding and accelerate construction.
