In brief
With discounts reaching up to 500 yuan, Apple hopes to attract cautious shoppers as local brands surge in popularity.
US tech titan Apple is rolling out a rare four-day promotion in China, starting January 4th, offering discounts of up to 500 yuan ($68.50) on its latest iPhones. This move comes amid rising competition from local smartphone makers like Huawei, who have slashed their premium phone prices by up to 20%. As economic uncertainty looms in China, consumer spending remains sluggish, prompting both Apple and Huawei to aggressively seek buyers. The discounts include savings on the latest flagship models, notably the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max, which now start at 7,999 yuan and 9,999 yuan, respectively. Apple previously offered similar promotions last year prior to the Lunar New Year celebrations, reinforcing its attempts to remain relevant in the competitive market."Apple's approach has evolved to meet the changing behavior of Chinese shoppers," explains Will Wong from market intelligence firm IDC. With consumers now gravitating towards value, these discounts could help Apple avoid slipping behind its rivals, as other brands benefit from heightened purchasing interest. The discount trend isn't isolated; it's part of a broader strategy among various sectors in China, where retailers and manufacturers are enticing customers reluctant to spend due to an economic slowdown. Apple's position in the Chinese market has faced pressure from local companies like Vivo and Xiaomi, which have gained significant market share. In fact, Vivo reported a staggering 20% increase in sales, securing its spot as the leading smartphone maker in Q3 2024. While Apple experienced a slight dip of 0.3% in sales during the same time, Huawei has seen its numbers soar by over 40%, even amid challenging geopolitical circumstances. As competition heats up, Apple’s discounts could be a crucial gambit in regaining consumer interest and loyalty in one of its most important markets.
