In brief
Isabel dos Santos, Africa's richest woman, is fighting back against UK's recent sanctions, insisting they stem from political motivations, not corruption.
Isabel dos Santos, once hailed as Africa’s richest woman, has publicly criticized the United Kingdom for recently imposing sanctions on her, labeling her a "notorious kleptocrat." Speaking in an interview with BBC Africa, she expressed shock at the asset freeze and travel ban, stating that she has not been convicted of any crime. The UK government has accused her of enriching herself through embezzlement from state-run companies, allegedly costing Angola up to £350 million. Dos Santos claims the accusations are politically charged and that she has not been given a fair chance to defend herself. The former first daughter of Angola, who studied engineering in London, built a diverse business empire encompassing telecommunications and banking after returning home. However, allegations regarding her dealings surfaced in 2020 during the "Luanda Leaks" investigation, which questioned her financial practices while in charge of Angola's state oil company. The former president's daughter argues that the actions against her are an attempt by Angola’s current leadership to distance themselves from the previous regime, slamming them for betraying her late father's legacy.Despite her assets being frozen, Dos Santos insists that this situation has not deterred her from considering future political ambitions, stating she's open to serving her country in various capacities. As she strives to reclaim her reputation, Dos Santos hopes to clarify the misconceptions surrounding her story and potentially participate in Angola's political future.
