Ukrainian forces used drones to strike a key oil terminal in St. Petersburg, Russia’s north‑western city. The hit created a huge column of black smoke and is seen as a blow to Moscow’s war economy. Moscow has not publicly confirmed the damage, but the strike reflects Ukraine’s intensified attacks on Russian energy infrastructure. Ukraine claims the terminal could produce 12.5 million tonnes of petroleum products per year. This operation comes as Russia battles fuel shortages declared by its president.

In a midnight strike, Ukrainian drones hit one of Russia’s biggest oil terminals in St. Petersburg, sending a column of black smoke into the sky.

The Ukrainians described the target as "one of the largest" oil facilities in Russia, capable of producing 12.5 million tonnes of petroleum products per year.

Hit happened 850 km (528 miles) from the Ukrainian border.

Ukrainian forces also claimed a key naval base in Kronstadt was struck.

St. Petersburg Governor said 72 drones were shot down over the city.

Local warnings urged residents to stay indoors due to potential drone traffic and possible internet disruptions.

Russia hasn’t officially confirmed damage yet.

Russia’s president recently admitted fuel shortages were linked to Ukrainian attacks and has signed a law to boost domestic fuel supplies.

The strike is part of Ukraine’s larger campaign to disrupt Russian energy infrastructure, with the Ukrainian military claiming nearly 43% of Russia’s oil refining capacity has been disabled.

Official Russian accounts have not confirmed these losses, but the Russian defense ministry said it shot down more than 500 Ukrainian drones and missiles overnight.

The event underscores the escalating tension as both sides prepare ahead of next week’s NATO summit in Turkey.
