Trump’s Flag‑Waving Rally Turns Washington Into a High‑Speed Racetrack
On Sunday, President Donald Trump joined crowds in Washington DC to kick off the Freedom 250 IndyCar Grand Prix, a city‑wide race celebrating the nation’s 250th birthday.
Trump and First Lady Melania collected a green flag and drove the presidential limousine, nicknamed The Beast, along the 1.7‑mile circuit that sliced past the National Mall, the Washington Monument and the Capitol building. At the finish line, Air Force One flew overhead in a fly‑over that added sparks to the event.
The race featured 25 top drivers who navigated 147 laps and seven sharp turns—making a total 250‑mile course that pays homage to the anniversary. While the city’s maximum speed limit is a modest 55mph, the race cars reached speeds up to 190mph, echoing Formula 1’s high‑speed thrills.
Organisers expected 140,000 fans, many winning free tickets through a national lottery, while premium packages, priced at $5,000, were sold to VIP supporters. The celebration prompted city officials to close key roads, secure manholes, resurface asphalt, and temporarily shut down the Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport’s airspace for the fly‑over.
The National Gallery of Art conducted vibration tests to protect its priceless collection, but the roar from the engines was largely drowned out by cheers from spectators wearing Uncle Sam hats, a Statue of Liberty costume, and various patriotic gear. American driver Josef Newgarden remarked, “It’s super unique. You might never see this again, and as an American driver, it’s very special celebrating the 250th anniversary of the country.”
Earlier this summer, Trump also hosted a UFC event on the White House lawn, followed by a fireworks display on July 4th, further blending politics and spectacle in the capital.
