India is making waves in the trade world! Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal recently declared "fantastic progress" in trade deal negotiations with the United States while in London, where he also signed a significant free trade deal with the UK. Despite missing previous deadlines set by US President Trump, both countries are optimistic about finalizing an interim trade agreement by the end of this year. Speaking with Reuters, Goyal expressed his hopes for a "consequential partnership," emphasizing that negotiations on contentious agricultural and dairy tariffs are still ongoing. Meanwhile, President Trump has been vocal about wanting greater access to India's farm sector, viewing it as an untapped gold mine. The current trade relationship between India and the US is hefty, with bilateral trade reaching $190 billion. Trump and Indian Prime Minister Modi plan to ramp this up to a whopping $500 billion. While India has already dialed down tariffs on select products, the US continues to deal with a $45 billion trade deficit, a situation Trump is eager to change. With trade discussions generating excitement, all eyes will be on both nations to see how they resolve outstanding issues in their negotiations.
