In brief
Heavy rains have devastated parts of southern and eastern Spain, resulting in historic flooding that wreaked havoc on homes and crops. This deluge, equivalent to a month’s worth of rain in just one day, has left agricultural areas like Andalusia reeling and citizens on high alert for more rainfall.
On Monday night, Manuel Yerai, a farmer in El Ejido, witnessed tennis ball-sized hail battering his pepper plants. He described the scene: “My greenhouses look like they had been shot at.” The storm affected cities like Valencia, Murcia, and Malaga, with rainfall levels reaching 150 to 200 liters per square meter, or around 40 to 50 gallons per square yard, within two hours. The severity prompted Spain’s meteorological agency to issue warnings of "extreme danger," urging people to avoid travel unless necessary.Rescues were necessary as helicopters helped those stranded in the floodwaters. With the meteorological agency predicting additional rain through the week, emergency precautions remain in effect as communities assess the extensive damage and prepare for what’s next.
