NBA Forward Brandon Clarke Dies Tragedically After Drug Overdose

The Memphis Grizzlies and the wider NBA community were shocked when 29‑year‑old forward Brandon Clarke died in May 2026 after an accidental overdose of heroin, cocaine and prescription medication.

The Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner ruled the death accidental, citing the effects of heroin and cocaine and the combined effects of multiple prescription drugs as a significant contributor. The full report will be released soon.

Clarke, a Canadian‑born, dual Canadian and U.S. citizen, was named to the NBA All‑Rookie First Team in 2020. He played 309 games, including 50 starts, averaging 10.2 points per game, but injuries limited him to only two games in the 2025‑26 season.

Shortly before his death, Clarke was arrested in Arkansas on misdemeanor charges of speeding and possession of a controlled substance. His diagnosis at the time of death included the noted drug use.
